Houston could hold Kansas City Current to a draw
Odds and expectations
Houston Dash are a tougher team to beat than their 3.83 odds for Sunday's home game against Kansas City Current suggest. The Current are the clear favorites at 1.77 for this matchup, but the bookmakers appear to be taking a similar view to Houston's 2026 campaign, which has seen them win one, draw two and lose two.
Recent results and threats
The scoreboard doesn't do justice to the Dash's performances in 2026, however, as both of their previous two results — a 1-0 win over Bay FC and a 1-0 loss to Gotham FC – came at home and were both closely fought contests. The same goes for their previous five encounters with the Current, of which they have won one, drawn one, and lost three.
Houston's attacking threat in 2026 has not been outstanding, but the Dash are certainly capable of turning defence into attack quickly and have scored five goals in their last five. Defender Kat Rader has been their biggest threat, scoring two of those five.
Dash have proven to be a tough nut to crack at home
Kansas City are not in such bad form themselves, having also won one, drawn two and lost two of their last five, but Chris Armas' attack-first blend of fluid 4-3-3 patterns and direct transition play has certainly given the Current more bite.
The Current's danger man in 2026 is Haley Hopkins, who has scored three of their eight goals in his last five appearances.
The Current's away record of two wins and seven defeats from nine in NWSL 2026 is nothing to get excited about, especially as they have averaged only 0.78 goals per game on their travels and conceded 2.00 per game. So even though the Current may have the edge in talent and style of play, we're expecting Houston to take something from this game.
- 1-0 away loss to Boston Legacy FC
- 5-1 win over Racing Louisville at home
- 1-1 tie with Angel City FC
Kansas City can edge a close game
Fabrice Gautrat's style of soccer is a little like chess – setting up to be compact and hard to break down, then using the width and half-spaces to counterattack when the ball is won. Armas' Current, on the other hand, are an overload-based, front-foot team with plenty of attacking power.
This should be a contrast of styles and one that the Current can edge, but we'll take the tie at 3.8 to pay off while the bookies don't appear to believe in Houston's ability to compete with the Current. The 1.65 about Over 2.5 goals also looks too small, so we'll pass on that, but we do expect an open and chance-filled game.
