Big game in central Mexico
Match context
Pachuca CF and Deportivo Toluca FC will face off in a big Liga MX game at Estadio Hidalgo on Sunday with both teams seeking to enhance their standing in the top half of the Clausura table. Toluca have been the better of the two over the last month or so, although Pachuca will be the more difficult to beat at home where they have built their record during this campaign.
Standings and stakes
Toluca are currently occupying the 2-4 positions in the Clausura table with around 24 points from ten games so far, while Pachuca are firmly in the upper third with around 20. Both are still very much in contention for a direct quarterfinal place in the 2025-2026 season. A Toluca win would keep them in the mix for a place in the top three as they defend their title, but the hosts can close the gap and boost their quarterfinal seeding by claiming a home win.
Pachuca play with purpose in possession
Esteban Solari has Pachuca playing with purpose in a 4-2-3-1 system that presses high and transitions quickly. They have been a possession-based side with a disciplined and compact shape at home from which they supply Rondón through wide and midfield combinations.
Rondón has been their most dangerous player, scoring winner after winner to give Pachuca home wins over Tigres, Necaxa and Puebla this season. The likes of Oussama Idrissi and the wide players have been a creative spark, putting Rondón into the right positions and stretching the opposition.
Toluca’s tactical mastery in Mexico
Antonio ‘El Turco’ Mohamed’s sides are always well-drilled and capable of making the necessary adjustments to get the better of opponents in big games. He has taken Toluca to titles during his time in charge, and his side have become the benchmark for Liga MX clubs.
- Mohamed’s 4-2-3-1 is very flexible in that it can play as a disciplined mid-block or with one of the midfielders dropping in to create a double pivot.
- When they play a 4-4-1-1, as they often did against Pumas and Juárez recently, they are very good on the counterattack and have a dangerous forward and an attacking midfield group who can hurt teams on the break.
Toluca can snatch the win
Paulinho is in form, having scored regular goals for Toluca during the Clausura, including winners against Pumas and Juárez. Alexis Vega and the other creative midfielders provide him with lots of chances and are also goal threats from deeper positions.
Toluca have looked the more steady team over the past month or so, but Pachuca have been rock solid at Estadio Hidalgo and it is difficult to tip against the hosts in this fixture. However, Mohamed’s side are the value to edge this game and continue their title defence, although there are plenty of reasons to back the home side to keep it close in what could be a classic game for Toluca.
Both sides can be expected to be close to full strength, so we’re keen to have a bet on the ‘BTTS - Yes’ option at 1.62, while ‘Over 2.5 goals’ looks good at 1.7, given the open, attacking nature of the previous games between these two sides.
