Path of Regions Cup clash is a classic Russian Cup semi-final
The Fonbet Russian Cup is the 2025-2026 equivalent of the Soviet Cup, which was first contested in 1936, and there has always been a sense of occasion around the Cup final between two teams who have some history against each other. This first-leg encounter between PFK Kryliya Sovetov Samara and FK Lokomotiv Moscow should also be special as both sides will be gunning for some silverware to give their domestic campaigns a boost.
Lokomotiv Moscow are probably the better all-round team and have the advantage in the overall head-to-head record between the clubs, although Krylia have caused their share of upset wins in the past. The 2021 Russian Cup final, won by the Moscow club 3-1, has been a highlight of that rivalry, but so has Krylia’s 5-1 home win in March 2025, which is a notable exception.
Lokomotiv’s all-around quality gives them the edge
Tactical setup
The visitors should have the quality and pedigree to overcome Krylia in this match, but the hosts have been excellent in the cup and cannot be underestimated. In coach Magomed Adiyev, the hosts have an organiser, capable of getting his players to be compact and to work hard for the ball during transitions, which they did extremely well in a 2-1 win at Orenburg in their last Cup game.
Lokomotiv, under Mikhail Galaktionov, are much more free-flowing, setting up with two high-lines of pressing players that can disrupt opponents wide and a structured build-up style to build from the back. Adiyev’s men set up in a 4-2-3-1 or 4-4-2 and will press or sit deep depending on the situation, although they are generally more comfortable playing at home.
Key players
- Lokomotiv have been consistently in the upper half of the Russian league standings for years and they have been able to avoid slumps because of their balance between attack and defence.
- The defensive strength is led by the likes of César Montes and Alexander Silyanov, but also a goalkeeper as good as Anton Mitryushkin, while forward Aleksey Batrakov, with double-digit league goals, is their talisman and set-piece specialist.
Hosts can be dangerous in the Cup
Krylia will need to make the most of their set pieces and have a proven Cup goal-scorer in Vadim Rakov, although he is flagged with a foot injury. They are a very useful side when they are at full strength and have Vladimir Ignatenko, Geoffrey Chinedu and Ivan Oleynikov to support their main forward in scoring chances.
Nikolay Komlichenko and Dmitriy Vorobyov add aerial power and finishing ability in the frontline, while Sergey Pechenin and Daniel Fernández are the glue that hold the midfield together when Krylia need to be in a compact block, which they often are.
Krylia have been pretty poor in the league, but good in the Cup, but they concede too many goals in the wrong places and are nowhere near as solid as Lokomotiv. The draw at 3.7 seems way too long for a game this big and there’s just as much value in the both teams to score bet at 1.72.
The ‘No’ in the BTTS market will come in at 2.03 if Lokomotiv can control the game, but we believe Krylia will have enough to make it close and are taking the 1-1 draw.
