Mallorca’s new boss to make his mark
Match context
It’s not every weekend that a relegation-threatened side faces a title-chasing team in a game that is also a serious clash of contrasting football philosophies, but that is exactly what will happen when Real Mallorca host Real Madrid at Son Moix on Saturday.
New management and approach
The hosts are under new management after Martin Demichelis took over in late February 2026 and the Argentine has already begun to try to change the identity of his team, who had been a defence-first side with a low block to try and avoid defeat. Demichelis is much more ambitious than that, trying to make the team more positive, with a higher line, more possession and more pressing.
This will be a real test of how much he has managed to change Mallorca’s style in the last couple of months because they face a Real Madrid team who are very structured in the way they build up from the back and move the ball forward with tempo.
Los Blancos are in excellent form
Alvaro Arbeloa, who manages Real Madrid, has added his own twist to the team’s identity, but the style of play that Los Blancos have used under the former right-back hasn’t changed much - the build-up is structured and they press as a unit with real discipline.
Real Madrid have won nine of their 14 LaLiga road games this season, drawing three and losing just two while conceding an average of just 1.00 goals per game. Their form has been superb over the past month, winning three in a row to move up to second in the standings with 69 points from 29 games, but Mallorca are not far off them in 18th with 28 points from the same number of matches.
An open game at Son Moix
Prediction and odds
Real Madrid have an excellent head-to-head record against Mallorca in LaLiga, winning four of the last five meetings, including a 2-1 win at home seven months ago. But their odds of 1.56 for another away win seem short, so we’ll back the value in Over 2.5 goals at 1.65, taking Both Teams to Score - Yes at 1.7 as well.
Match outlook
It’s likely to be a game that has a lot of goals in it as this is a match-up that could test the change in intensity and ambition that Mallorca are looking to employ under Demichelis. The Los Merengues will be the winners if that is the case, but we believe the hosts will score against a Madrid side that has conceded 1.00 goals per away match in the league.
Key players and form
- Kylian Mbappe leads the scoring charts for Los Blancos with 23 goals in 24 appearances this season, while Vinicius Junior has been in prolific form with three in the past ten.
- Vedat Muriqi is the chief goal threat for Mallorca with 18 in 28 league games and he’s scored two of his side’s last five.
