Tight fixture between similar sides
Odds and context
Rodina Moscow are the slight favorites at 2.69 for Wednesday’s away fixture against Rotor Volgograd, with the hosts priced at 3.02 and the tie at 2.91.
These are similar odds to the reverse fixture five months ago, which ended in a 0-0 draw at Rodina Moscow after a cagey first-half was followed by a drab second 45 minutes. However, there is likely to be more to this fixture given the stakes at play for both teams with Rodina chasing promotion and Rotor still vying for top-half security.
Rodina form and tactics
Juan Diaz’ men have been in good form of late, winning both of their last two away fixtures against Sokol Saratov and Fakel by 3-1 scorelines. They are likely to try and dominate possession in a 4-3-3 system that involves a lot of pressing from the front three. The Spaniard has impressed since taking the reins in September 2025, instilling a possession-based game in the squad that they can execute in the right measure with talented players to control the ball in midfield.
Rotor rely on their rock solid defence
Valery Burlachenko has had a similarly impressive impact on Rotor since his appointment in November 2025, instilling a pragmatic, well-organised approach to the team who are happy to sit in a compact 4-2-3-1 and play on the counter-attack.
Abu-Said Eldarushev has chipped in with three of Rotor’s last 10 goals to add some punch to the side as Said Aliev continues to lead the team with 11 in 29 FNL 2025/2026 appearances. The hosts have won their last three at home, including a 3-1 success over Neftekhimik and a tight 1-0 win over Sokol Saratov.
Rodina to edge tight fixture
The last three head-to-head meetings in the FNL 2025/2026 have resulted in one win for Rodina and two ties, with Rotor yet to taste success against the Moscow club. I’m going for the same result here as we had last time as these are two similar sides who know each other well.
With the promotion chasing side the slight favourites, I’m taking the home side to edge out a victory in this one at 3.02. This will be a chess match of possession versus transition and Rodina’s press will test Rotor’s solidity at the back, but I think they can hold firm and nick it. Under 2.5 goals is available at 1.42 and both teams to score ‘No’ is 1.67, which are both hefty prices given the nature of the fixture.
- With 1.64 goals scored and 1.00 conceded per away match in 14 away fixtures, Rodina are a dangerous team on their travels but not invincible and they have been known to slip up.
- Rotor have an impressive home record in the FNL 2025/2026 with nine wins, two draws and three defeats from 14 fixtures, averaging 1.50 goals scored and only 0.57 goals conceded per match.
