Pilgrims have the edge at Home Park
League One leaders Plymouth Argyle FC welcome fourth-placed Huddersfield Town to Home Park in a promotion battle on Saturday and, while the Pilgrims are our pick to win, it should be very close.
Plymouth have 19 points from 10 games, while Huddersfield have 16 from nine and both are going well in 2026-2027.
The Pilgrims have four wins and one defeat from their last five with three consecutive victories in the bag going into Saturday's clash. They drew 2-2 at Newport County in the EFL Trophy in midweek, winning on penalties, then beat AFC Wimbledon 2-1 at home in League One last Saturday.
Huddersfield are in mixed form with two wins, two draws and one loss from their last five games. They hammered Rochdale 5-0 at home in the EFL Trophy a week ago, then drew 2-2 with Sheffield Wednesday at the John Smith's Stadium on Saturday.
High-tempo game should be decided in transition
Head-to-head and expectations
These two teams know each other very well from League One, which they are both enjoying this season, and Plymouth came out on top when they last met six months ago.
Argyle beat Huddersfield 3-1 in the West Yorkshire club's last trip to Home Park and are unbeaten in the Terriers' last two visits to the home of the Devon club. There is every reason to expect a close and entertaining game on Saturday as both sides have the momentum behind them at the moment.
Style and tactics
Tom Cleverley's side play a compact game, finding a rhythm when they have the ball and pressing selectively when they don't. Martin Drury has Huddersfield on the front foot with a 3-at-the-back system and wing-backs, pressing high and trying to overload teams wide in transition.
Recent home and away records
Plymouth's home record in League One is three wins and two defeats from five games, averaging 1.60 goals per game scored and 1.00 per game conceded. Huddersfield have won two, drawn two and lost one from five on the road in the third tier, averaging 1.40 goals per away game.
Terriers have a livewire in Taylor
We're going to take Plymouth to edge this early-season promotion battle with the home edge and better league form to give Plymouth a slight advantage.
But it should be very tight and goals are expected at both ends to satisfy the 1.5 price for both teams to score and the 1.65 for over 2.5.
This clash should be decided in the turnover zones, with Plymouth trying to punish Huddersfield's high line and the Terriers looking to overload the flanks.
- Aribim Pepple is the danger man for the hosts with three goals in eight League One games, scoring three times in their last five.
- Huddersfield have an in-form player in Joe Taylor, who is the livewire in their team and leads the League One scoring charts with five goals from seven games.
