Turkey Football Leagues

In South-Eastern Europe, many nations bring a lot of support for their football teams, but not many can make a case for themselves like Turkey is. Turkey football leagues might not be the most challenging, but the fans are doing such a great job that Turkey’s first-tier was like a magnet for world-class players in recent years.

Starting with the likes of Gheorghe Hagi or Alex and continuing with the Didier Drogba’s, Wesley Sneijder’s, and Lukas Podolski’s, the first division from Turkey was always talent-rich in the last 25 years. Even now, players like Radamel Falcao, Mesut Ozil, Luiz Gustavo or even Mario Balotelli are gracing Turkish football fields with their tricks.

The Turkish Football Federation (TFF) was founded in 1923, but football became professional only in 1959. The excellent results Turkey managed to achieve on the international level were possible thanks to the Turkey football leagues, which at the moment are organised as it follows:

  • Super Lig (1st tier)
  • TFF 1. Lig (2nd tier)
  • TFF 2. Lig (3rd tier, two divisions)
  • TFF 3. Lig (4th tier, three divisions)

The driving forces in the national championship are the three huge clubs from Istanbul: Galatasaray Fenerbahce and Besiktas. These are followed by Trabzonspor and recently by Basaksehir, the champion from 2020.

The first one to really achieve great heights on the European level was Galatasaray, who managed to play the European Cup semifinal in 1989. Until then, no other Turkish team got farther than the quarter-finals of a continental competition.

This was followed later by the great Galatasaray team of the late 1990s, with the Romanians Gheorghe Hagi and Gheorghe Popescu, Brazilian World Cup winner Taffarel, and the stellar locals like Hakan Sukur, Okan Buruk, Emre Belozoglu or Hakan Sas.

Besides some solid performances in the Champions League, where they managed to get into the final eight teams several times, the Golden Boys of Galatasaray were on fire in the UEFA Cup. In the 1999-00 season, they’ve won the trophy, on penalties, against Arsenal, after they left behind teams like AC Milan, Borussia Dortmund, Mallorca or Leeds United.

A few months later, in the European Super Cup, they’ve met the first version of the galactic Real Madrid, who lined up players like Luis Figo, Raul, Roberto Carlos, Iker Casillas or Claude Makelele. The score was 1-0, thanks to a goal scored by Mario Jardel.

On the national team level, Turkey finished 3rd in the 2002 FIFA World Cup and reached the semifinals of Euro 2008. All of these, thanks to the great competition provided by the Turkish football leagues of the 2000s.

The focus is still there regarding Turkish football, and punters are still searching for the best Turkey football odds. And you know where to find them: on BetBrain, one of the finest odds comparison tools on the market.
