Burton’s ‘Bowyer’ effect needs more time
Burton Albion have made a mixed start to life under Gary Bowyer, who took the reigns on 17 December 2024, and have won two, drawn one and lost two of their last 5 League One 2026/2027 games. This Saturday's home game with Leyton Orient will be no easy task for the 10th-placed club in 2026/27 (13 points from 11 games) and they will need all the momentum they can find.
Burton Albion drew 2-2 away to Peterborough United last weekend after a 1-0 loss at Doncaster Rovers and they arrive at the Pirelli Stadium on the back of some patchy results. Leyton Orient are a point better off in ninth spot having played one less game (14 points from 10) and they are also coming into this late season matchup in a bit of a mixed form with two wins, one draw and two defeats from their last 5.
Orient have Oriented well for the top half
Management and approach:
Richie Wellens has done a fantastic job at Leyton Orient since he was appointed on 9 March 2022 and this season he has moulded his team into a structured, high-pressing unit that wins the ball high up the field and looks to dominate possession by advancing through the thirds quickly.
Tactical contrast:
This is a clash of styles in every way you could imagine. Burton are compact, pragmatic and set-piece heavy, with wing-backs and direct crosses doing the damage, whereas Orient are a structured, high-pressing side that looks to win the ball high and progress quickly through midfield.
Recent results and verdict:
A 0-0 away draw with Bradford City and a 2-0 home win over Blackpool were Leyton's last two results and these are two very different games, so it's difficult to say whether they are in top form. Burton are in similar form, but Orient's away numbers are better and that, combined with the fact they have been strong in the road games of late, leads us to take them to at least avoid defeat.
Two teams to watch at the double
This is looking like a close game from the outset and although Burton are a decent side, Orient are going to want to control the pace and that may just be their undoing.
Burton are 2.48 to win and Orient are 2.64 at the time of writing, which is very tight considering the difference in their form, but I'm going for The O's to avoid defeat in this mid-table matchup.
- A 2-2 draw at 3.5 looks about right to me, but I will also take the more cautious 1.9 Unders 2.5, while Both teams to score at 1.67 hints at a lively encounter where both teams make their mark.
