Home side Houston should edge this 2026 MLS contest
Houston Dynamo have a terrific home record in MLS 2026 and they should beat Real Salt Lake at the Shell Energy Stadium on Thursday, but the visitors have dominated the recent head-to-head, so the hosts are unlikely to run away with it.
Ben Olsen has done a brilliant job at Houston since taking charge in November 2022. His high-press, vertical style of soccer ensures that the Orange Crush are always on the front foot, regardless of the opposition or stage of the game. His 4-3-3 or 4-2-3-1 set-up is designed to pressure the opposition high up the field and turn them over quickly so that his team can break fast and create chances in the first third.
Pablo Mastroeni has a very different approach to the game having transformed Real Salt Lake into a compact, possession-based unit during his tenure, which began in August 2021. His 3-5-2 system, which utilises wingbacks and a tight midfield block, is perfect for controlling the tempo and overloading wide areas when they have the ball.
RSL have dominated the head-to-head recently
Recent meetings
With RSL winning all of the last 3 MLS 2026 meetings between the teams, including a 3-0 victory at home over Houston just three months ago, we cannot ignore the head-to-head. But this should be a tense battle due to the contrasting playing styles that both teams have and the fact that Houston need to be the ones to push the play early on.
Odds and prediction
The home side are 1.73 favourites, but that's a shade low considering Real Salt Lake are 4.2 and the draw 3.95. Houston are in better form and RSL are in awful shape after losing 3 on the spin, so we'll side with the hosts. But we don't want to get carried away as the visitors can cause problems and may well nick a goal.
Expect goals on both ends in an open game
Houston should win this game but there's enough about Real Salt Lake to suggest they can get on the scoresheet at least, so the main selections will be a home win and both teams to score. Over 2.5 goals at 1.57 is also a decent bet considering the edge towards an open encounter, while both teams to score is a strong 1.55 in the match result market.
- Guilherme Augusto has scored 12 MLS 2026 goals in 21 appearances, including 2 in Houston's last 5, so he is the best choice for an anytime goal.
- Sergi Solans has 9 goals in 20 games for RSL and leads the scoring charts for the Utah-based outfit, so he is the clear choice for a goal at any time.
