Lions can get to grips with Rams
Recent meetings
Millwall can get the better of Derby County for the second time in three meetings when the two clubs clash at The Den on Saturday afternoon. The Lions beat the Rams 1-0 at home in Championship 2025/2026 seven months ago and have clearly got their measure of late.
Millwall tactics
Alex Neil has set up Millwall to be compact, but very active in terms of pressing and penetration with the ball. They are set up in a back four with either a 4-2-3-1 or 4-3-3 shape and will mix up their style of pressing depending on the game. Neil will ask his players to press in short, sharp bursts and look to exploit turnovers – with the pace of the players, it can be very effective.
Derby tactics
Derby County have not had much joy away at The Den in the last few years and go into Saturday's game having not won either of their last two away games at their hosts. John Eustace's side play a more pragmatic style, preferring to set up in a 4-2-3-1 or narrow 4-3-3 and are much more suited to sitting in a compact block and countering teams.
Millwall have the momentum
Millwall come into the game on the back of two mixed results – a 2-2 home tie with Lincoln City and a 2-1 away defeat to Portsmouth last time out. The latter was particularly frustrating for Neil's men as they were ahead until late on. But with two wins, two ties and two defeats in their last six home Championship games, The Den has been a place where they can do a little better.
Derby County are on a five-game winless run (D3, L2) coming into this and will have no confidence that they can make it back-to-back away wins on the road. Their three most recent games have been a 4-1 defeat away to Queens Park Rangers, a 1-0 loss at home to Stoke City and a 1-1 draw away to Sheffield United.
Match is anyone’s to lose
Tactical battle
With the respective styles of these two clubs it should be a pretty cagey chess match with Millwall trying to get at Derby in the half-spaces and the Rams looking to spring counters.
Players to watch
- Millwall's Camiel Neghli has provided the goal boost for the Lions with two in his last five games, but Lyndon Dykes is still the main goal threat with four in eight Championship 2026/2027 matches.
- Derby County have Bobby Clark leading the line with only two in eight, so the visitors will need him to find his scoring boots to get the job done on Saturday.
Betting view
It looks as if a Millwall win at 1.74 has to be passed on here as Derby County can be a stubborn team on their day and may well keep this close and cagey. The draw at 3.75 is also unappealing, but Derby are without a win in their last three away (D2, L1) and we will take the win for Millwall. An alternative play on under 2.5 goals at 1.95 appeals more in a match of this nature where it will be all about the margins and the win could be by just one goal.
