- Form: Stockport County have won their last five games in a row and arrive at Kassam Stadium in full stride.
- Home form: Oxford United are unbeaten in League One 2026/2027 at home, winning two and drawing two of four games and scoring eight goals.
- Away form: Stockport have won three of their five away games in League One 2026/2027, drawing one and conceding an average of just 0.60 goals per game.
Tight battle expected in Oxford
On paper, this should be a close, interesting matchup between two clubs with clear identities under the stewardship of Jim McNulty, who was appointed on 1 July 2026, and Aaron Ramsey, who has been in charge of Oxford United since 23 June 2026. Stockport County have played with much more clear purpose this season under McNulty than they did in the previous two campaigns.
Their 3-4-3 or 3-4-1-2 structure and use of wing-backs to provide width has created an acute transition threat that has been punishing opponents in the early weeks of the season. The Hatters are 22 points from 11 games at the top of League One 2026/2027 and their early pace has already given them a head start on the rest of the division.
The last three matches have been particularly eye-catching, notching a 3-1 home win against Barnsley, a 1-0 home victory over Bromley and a 0-2 away win at Doncaster.
Oxford up against it
Oxford United have been solid and are currently 7th in the table after nine games played and 18 points collected, but they are still well off the automatic promotion group. Ramsey has implemented a more structured and possession-led identity onto the U's, which has seen them set up in a 4-2-3-1 with plenty of movement in wide areas, patient build-up and a 'controlled' pressing game rather than 'constant' pressure.
Their last three League One 2026/2027 results have shown a bit of grit and determination with a 1-2 away win at Notts County, 1-1 away draw with Mansfield Town and a 2-1 win at home to Wigan Athletic.
Stockport have the momentum
Odds and prediction
Stockport's momentum makes them the marginal favorites here, but given the gap in the odds, we're happy to side with the Hatters at 2.07. Oxford are available at 3.09 and the draw at 3.5, which certainly fits the recent form of both teams and the odds on the game.
Tactical matchup
This should be a chess match with Oxford's central creativity and quality going up against Stockport's compact shape and back three that allows their wingers and number 10 to get forward.
Outcome and key players
A draw or Stockport double chance looks a good play, but Oxford's excellent home record keeps this one alive for them, too. In terms of a scoreline, we're going for a 1-1 draw as Stockport's defence has been near-impregnable on the road in League One 2026/2027 and Oxford's home record suggests they will find a way to get on the scoresheet.
- Gatlin O'Donkor has three goals in six games and is Oxford's leading marksman in League One 2026/2027.
- Kyle Wootton has been Stockport's biggest threat with five goals in eight games and four goals from their last seven.
