- Oxford United have higher-level recent experience so bring some pedigree to this cup tie
- Leyton Orient have a home crowd and familiarity on their side in this clash
- Orient and Oxford are tied 12-12 in all-time head-to-head with 14 draws
Oxford’s pedigree could see them through
Two League One sides who are going in opposite directions will meet in a potentially fascinating EFL Cup first-round clash when Leyton Orient and Oxford United scrap it out at BetWright Stadium.
Leyton Orient finished a woeful 20th in League One in 2025/26 with 52 points, and an obvious need to hit the ground running in the new campaign. However, Oxford United drop down a level after a miserable time in the Championship and bring that extra experience with them into the cup.
The match odds seem to reflect Oxford's better level of opposition, with United the favourites at 3/2 to Orient's 42/25, with the draw coming in at 12/5. However, the two sides are tied 12-12 in the all-time H2H log with 14 draws, so this one should be evenly matched.
Oxford’s structure and Orient’s width
Richie Wellens usually sets up Orient to play compact but progressive football, overloading the wings and pressing the opposition in waves. Dom Ballard is the top scorer from the 2025/26 Sky Bet League One campaign after scoring 23 league goals, while Josh Koroma adds an extra bite to the O's attack and should suit Wellens' 4-3-3 and 4-2-3-1 base.
Matt Bloomfield has made United a much more disciplined and hard to break down team since taking over the reins and he looks to have them set up to be a real handful in League One. Oxford are a narrow side that will sit compact and try to disrupt the central lanes, then hit on the break with real venom.
Bloomfield's side can be devastating going forward when on the counter, but Cameron Brannagan is the heartbeat of the side, running the midfield and also having a real set-piece threat. Sam Long brings experience and no-nonsense defensive nous to a side that will need him to steady the ship.
Oxford’s experience can edge it
Oxford's 2025/26 campaign was a bit of a mixed bag as they enjoyed a 4-1 thrashing of Sheffield Wednesday at home, but were beaten by Millwall, Wrexham and Derby.
Orient's end of season form saw them win none of their last five and concede goals at crucial times.
These two sides have met in three of the last six years, with Oxford winning 5-0 in the Football League Trophy in 2022, before a 3-2 victory in a League One thriller in 2023 and Orient gaining payback with a 2-1 victory in 2024.
This could easily go either way so the draw or both teams to score at 67/100 is a solid play here as this is unlikely to be a cagey cup clash at BetWright Stadium. A correct score of 1-1 or 1-0 looks best as neither side will want to concede, but the visitors have the pedigree to edge it.
Both sides have been in pre-season rotation mode, so the bench could be crucial and one of the managers may need to pull a rabbit out of the hat early on. The visitors have the recent experience of playing against better quality opposition, while Orient have the home crowd and a familiarity with the surroundings to make this spicy. A goal from either side could swing it, but Jamie Cumming's ability to make the big save for the O's makes them a playable underdog for a 1-0 scoreline.
