Bristol Rovers to edge a Posh play-off
Steve Evans has made an immediate impact at Bristol Rovers and the early signs are that he is getting his team to play with an aggressive, direct style that makes them dangerous at both ends of the pitch. Rovers look much sharper going forward in the early days of the 2026-27 season with Bobby Kamwa giving them an early spark to their game and giving Evans's side a focal point to go at.
Kamwa scored in pre-season and he can mix the raw pace needed to make the most of Rovers' direct approach with enough finesse to be a danger from set plays. Ellis Harrison is another Rovers danger man after a goal against Leicester City, but the Pirates have a proper focal point in the forward position.
Peterborough United will test Rovers' defence on Saturday and they will have to be careful not to be dragged into a physical battle by the third-tier club.
Luke Williams' Posh are playing a more progressive, possession-based game this season, pressing high up the pitch and making the most of quick one-twos in the offensive third to stretch teams out.
Harry Leonard was the Posh's main man in EFL League One last season, netting 16 times as his side finished 18th, so he will probably be the best option to get on the scoresheet if any of the goals in this tie are to be taken on the break.
Archie Collins and Kyrell Lisbie provide a touch of craft and movement to a side that can do plenty of damage from the flanks, but Williams will need goalkeeper Alex Bass and his backline to remain solid to keep the cup tie on the straight and narrow.
The bookies are calling this a 50-50 affair and that looks about right with Rovers as slight favourites at 73/50, Posh at 41/25 and the draw at 5/2.
There's a narrow Rovers edge to be gained for a modest stake at that price and for the punt on the draw at around the same mark.
The main selection is for a Rovers edge, however, because Evans' men look the sharper of the two sides going forward and this should be a proper cup clash that could go either way. Over 2.5 goals at 67/100 and both teams to score at 53/100 looks good, too, as it will be a tight game with plenty of intensity.
Rovers and Peterborough shared the spoils in a pair of 0-0 draws in 2023 before Rovers edged a 1-0 home win in November 2022 in the last six competitive H2H meetings. Rovers won 3-1 when they last met in Bristol in February 2025 and Posh were 3-2 winners when the sides met at London Road in September 2024.
Rovers' pre-season form has been mixed with a 3-0 win at Weston-super-Mare, a 3-2 success at Salisbury, a 1-2 defeat to Leicester City, a 2-2 draw with Forest Green Rovers and a 1-1 stalemate at Notts County, so they need to string a couple of results together to get this season started.
Peterborough have also been in mixed form with a 0-0 draw at Neom SC, a 3-2 win at Colchester United, a 1-0 success at Peterborough Sports, a 0-1 loss at Boston United and a 1-3 defeat to Doncaster Rovers in their warm-up matches.
