- Previous season results: In the 2025/2026 season, Reading won one and drew one of two League One games with Plymouth.
- Current standings: Plymouth are 4th in League One 2026/2027 with 22 points from 13 games, one place and one point ahead of 5th-placed Reading on 21 from 12.
Two very good teams face off at Home Park
A close game is expected when Plymouth Argyle FC host Reading in the south coast on Saturday. The Pilgrims are a well-structured, wing-back, possession-based team who have played some of their best soccer of the season over the past few months under the astute management of Tom Cleverley, who took over on 13 June 2025.
Reading have a much more compact shape and prefer to play a faster game of vertical passing, with players like Jack Marriott running off the shoulder of the central striker. Leam Richardson took over the Royals at the end of October 2025 and has made them an interesting prospect since then.
Reading have won three and lost two of their last five games, but they come into this matchup with a good rhythm after back-to-back wins, a 1-0 home victory over Leyton Orient and a 2-1 win at home to Barnsley. The visitors have the momentum here.
Pilgrims need to bounce back after Stevenage stumble
Recent form
Plymouth were well beaten by Stevenage Borough 3-0 away last weekend. But the Pilgrims bounced back to form with a 3-2 win at Cambridge United earlier today, showing the sort of resilience that will be needed to achieve promotion.
Head-to-head
The recent head-to-head record of two games in League One 2025/2026 makes this a tough one to call as Reading won one and the other ended in a 2-2 draw at Reading. Plymouth have not won their last home game against Reading, which might give this rematch some extra spice for the hosts.
Home form and odds
Plymouth's record of three wins and three losses at their Home Park home this season is just about good enough to beat Reading's away record of one win, two draws and two defeats. The odds suggest that Plymouth are a shade too short at 2.28 to Reading's 2.76 with the draw priced at 3.7, but that is understandable given they have more wins on the board at this stage of the campaign.
Marriott is the main man in a game of cat and mouse
Plymouth like to control the ball, use width, and press in waves, and Reading prefer a tighter shape and faster vertical attacks, so we do not think this will be a slow-burn matchup.
Reading have been scoring goals of late with Paddy Lane adding two to Marriott's eight during their current five-game spell. So we're going to take a chance on goals when the market makes it attractive with Over 2.5 at 1.55 and Both Teams to Score – Yes at 1.45.
- Jack Marriott has eight goals in seven League One 2026/2027 appearances for Reading and is the clear number 10 option to score anytime in this matchup.
- Plymouth have a great attacking focal point in Aribim Pepple, who has chipped in with three goals in eight League One 2026/2027 matches and can get the better of a Reading defence that has conceded six goals in five away games this season.
