Spoiler alert – Rovers have teeth up front
Peterborough United will probably start the season with a couple of extra yards and a couple of levels of polish in the higher division, but this Carabao Cup first-round clash at the Memorial Stadium will be a real test. Bristol Rovers have looked sharper up front in pre-season, with Bobby Kamwa adding an early spark to proceedings, but the Gas have had a few sloppy moments and looked to be rotating some of their defensive personnel in friendlies.
Steve Evans is a pragmatic coach who gets results and doesn't suffer fools gladly, so Rovers will look to play a compact shape and hit opponents quickly on the counter with men ahead. The Gas will need to be in the game to do that, so this isn't a walk in the park by any means.
Posh will push Rovers to play their game
Tactics and key players:
Luke Williams has been getting a more progressive, possession-based game out of Peterborough United during pre-season, with the Posh pressing high and combining quickly to stretch teams. Harry Leonard is the Posh's most deadly player and, with 16 goals in EFL League One last season, the closest thing to a proven finisher. But Archie Collins and Kyrell Lisbie add guile and movement and, although Alex Bass isn't the most recognisable of names, he will be a crucial player in how tight Posh are at the back.
Pre-season form:
- Both sides have been in mixed form during pre-season – Rovers beating Weston-super-Mare 3-0, beating Salisbury 3-2, losing 1-2 to Leicester City, drawing 2-2 with Forest Green Rovers and drawing 1-1 at Notts County.
- Posh drew 0-0 with Neom SC, beat Colchester United 3-2, beat Peterborough Sports 1-0, lost 0-1 to Boston United and lost 1-3 to Doncaster Rovers.
Home advantage could prove key in cup clash
The draw is 3.5, Bristol Rovers are 2.46 and Peterborough are 2.64 with the bookmakers for this game and we think the home side have just the slightest edge in terms of favorite. The matchup record has swung both ways in the last six competitive head-to-heads, but the last two have seen Rovers edge a 1-0 win at home in November 2022 before Peterborough nicked a 3-2 thriller when the sides last met in September 2024.
There were two 0-0 draws in 2023 and Rovers won 3-1 in Bristol in February 2025 so there is certainly no reason to think this game won't be competitive. Our selection of over 2.5 goals at 1.67 and both teams to score at 1.53 points to this being an open game rather than a tight, cagey cup clash that is just as likely to end 0-0.
We've taken the hosts for a narrow edge in what should be a competitive cup game in which momentum, confidence and a place in round two are at stake. Ellis Harrison is a dangerous man for Rovers after scoring against Leicester and providing a real focal point up top, while Kamwa's raw pace will help to get Rovers transitioning quickly.
